Celebrations & Occasions Food & Dining Kap & Me Staycations & Vacations

32 at 32! Our HK Anniversary Getaway.

When you’ve been together as husband & wife for as long as Kap & I have been, it’s really hard to give each other a gift na. Lahat nalang kasi ng klase nang regalo, “been there, done that”. 😛

I don’t want to take away naman the romance out of the equation just because. The perfect solution? A TRIP! Not only is it something that we’d both enjoy, it would also give us time to spend with each other sans distractions. <3

On our 32nd anniversary last March 15, Kap & I flew to Hong Kong for an anniversary food trip. Armed with our maintenance meds & arthritis medicated patches lol, we set our sights, er taste, in search of the best roast duck/goose in HK.

Difference between a duck & a goose: Ducks and geese are related to each other. Not only because they have similar looks, similar shelter (ponds and lakes) and similar characteristics -but because they belong to the same family, Anatidae. Geese are generally larger than ducks. They have longer neck, more elongated body and longer legs compared to ducks. Ducks are usually smaller with stout body & short legs. Feet of both geese and ducks are webbed. Ducks are omnivores while geese are herbivores. Domestic ducks and geese are excellent source of meat, eggs and down feathers, which are used for stuffing the pillows.

Roast Goose is different from Roast Duck. Roast Goose is bigger & fatter. Historically, roast goose is more commonly seen in Hong Kong and Guangdong or in western terms Cantonese cuisine.

Highlight of our trip was a fabulous dinner at Mott 32. The place is fancy-shmancy & somewhat pricey, but I was adamant that we celebrate our coupling there.

32 years is a big accomplishment, don’t you agree? So it was 32 for 32, yay! <3 What a happy coincidence! 😉

Mott 32 is one of the most popular restaurants in Hong Kong. It was established by Maximal Concepts and is located at the basement of the Standard Chartered Bank Building. Its name is a tribute to NYC’s first Chinese convenience store, which opened in 1851 on 32 Mott Street, New York.

I made sure we’d get to eat fancy on our anniversary getaway so I emailed the restaurant in advance & booked a table for 2. Good thing too coz you need pala talaga a reservation to get in! And another reservation too for the roast duck which you can’t get just off the menu at your whim (the restaurant always runs out of quack.)

I brought a dress just for this occasion but we didn’t get to go back to the hotel anymore after an afternoon of exploration, so t-shirt it is. Good thing Ate lent me her lovely boho scarf so I didn’t look too dressed down for our dinner date. The basement restaurant’s elegant design is by Joyce Wang -a cross of New York industrial chic and Chinese imperial charm. <3

Not to miss is this very limited Barbecue Pluma Iberico Pork, HK$295. Fortunate to have had the foresight of ordering this in advance along with my reservation. Nagkakaubusan! @_@

The Apple Wood Roasted 42 Days Peking Duck is a MUST when eating at Mott 32.

A whole duck costs HK650 (4,400 php) one way, twice (even thrice) the amount of a regular duck, but puhleeze, can I tell you? It is SO WORTH IT! The moment we bit into this baby, Kap & I both gasped at the crunchiness of the skin, the tenderness of the meat, and the tastiness of the smoked fowl! <3

Even my normally stingy Kap said we made the right choice going for the gold & trying out this entree hihi. 🙂

I tried to place just half an order for the duck, but the restaurant only accepts whole. I was worried that we won’t be able to finish it on our own, but guess what. NO BROWN BAG! ;)) Such pigs we are!

I just love how he is so supportive of my blogging hobby. Lights, camera, action! ;)) Some veggies to offset our uber rich appetizer & main course.

I also made sure we had a personalized dessert. Might as well go all out, lol! Baka hindi na maulit. 😉

Naku, malamang nga hindi na mauulit! ;P

Here’s the rest of our HK sojourn. I hope you enjoy the video I compiled. I’m new at this so pagpasensyahan nyo nalang. It was a tiring trip because, as you know, Kap is not one to stay put in the hotel (if you can call it that hehe. But at least it’s an upgrade from the last hotel we stayed in, ERMERGHERD!!!). Pero masaya din naman kasi non-stop LAFANG kahit na super pagoda.

So here it is. Watch away! 😉 I used the app SPLICE by the way, in case you’re interested in knowing my video editing of choice. Naks!

To my dakilang pag-ibig, salamuch for all that you are, and all that you continue to be. I love you more than words can ever say. :-*

PS: On our last day, Kap bought a box of whole duck each from Yat Lok (duck) & Kam’s (goose) so the kids can have a taste test back home. Take note that both restaurants have been 1 star Michelin-rated for 4 consecutive years.

IMHO, Kam’s has a more pleasant atmosphere & friendly servers while Yat Lok still has the atrocious service & run down facility it has played out over the years. Find out which won in the GOppets household! 😉
