Food & Dining Staycations & Vacations The GOppets

Day 4 – NYC (12/24)

Tried our best to combat jetlag & get out early today before meeting up with Kap’s BFF, Stephen & his family. Nakakahiya sobra, they booked 2 days in NYC just so they could spend time with us, tapos tinulugan lang namin hehe. 😛

Easier said than done pala anglalabanan ko ang jetlag.” Napakahirap po kuya Eddie. As in ayaw talaga dumilat ng mga mata namin at nananaig ang body clock vs. kagustuhang gumala. Sarap humilata at matulog magdamag.

Devoted 2 hours to check out the Manhattan & Brooklyn bridges before the lunch meet up. It was easier with the Manhattan bridge from Dumbo’s point of view kasi konting lakad lang from the subway exit, nandun na. Plus some click-click-clicks of the camera, wagi.

The Manhattan Bridge is a suspension bridge that crosses the East River in New York City, connecting Lower Manhattan at Canal Street with Downtown Brooklyn at the Flatbush Avenue Extension. The main span is 1,470 ft long, with the suspension cables being 3,224 ft long. The bridge’s total length is 6,855 ft.

Dumbo (or DUMBO, short for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass) is a neighborhood in the New York City borough of Brooklyn and is tucked between the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges. Trendy Dumbo’s cobblestone streets and converted Brooklyn warehouse buildings are the backdrop for independent boutiques, high-end restaurants and trendy cafes.

The Brooklyn Bridge is a hybrid cable-stayed/suspension bridge in New York City. It connects the boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn, spanning the East River. The Brooklyn Bridge has a main span of 1,595.5 feet and a height of 276.5 ft above mean high water.

Fascinating facts About the Brooklyn Bridge: A ROOSTER MADE THE FIRST TRIP ACROSS THE BRIDGE! Ok, technically, Emily Warren (an American singer and songwriter) was the first human to make the trip across the historic bridge! She proudly rode in a carriage a week before its official opening, and sitting in her lap was a rooster which was considered a symbol of good luck.

Another interesting fact: TWENTY-ONE ELEPHANTS WALKED ACROSS THE BROOKLYN BRIDGE IN 1884! How do you convince one of America’s busiest cities that its newest bridge can offer safe transport to its many commuters? Elephants! The city called upon entrepreneurial showman P.T. Barnum to march 21 elephants across the Brooklyn Bridge in May of 1884 to show just how sturdy the span was. Kaya no worries, kayang-kaya kaming team #GOppets nitong pagkahaba-habang tulay!

Read more not-so-known but fascinating facts about the Brooklyn Bridge HERE!

Shortcut- homaygas!

We found out pagkatapos ng katakot-takot na torture, there’s a shortcut naman pala!

After all’s been said & done, we followed a sign leading to the subway from the bridge and landed right where we started, waaaah.

Only the thought of lunch gave me incentive to walk some more. Ang hirap talaga mag-commute mga mare, lalo na’t kung spoiled ka with a car back home. Ala-swertehan pa if you get seats on the subway. Kung nagkataong puno, tayo ka for the many stops until you get to your destination, yikes!

Ate read up about Shu Jiao Fu Zhou Cuisine, said to make the best pork & chive dumpling & peanut butter noodle in the Lower East Side, so we had a pre-lunch here to stave off the crazy hunger brought about by the loooong walk at the bridge. @_@

Shu Jiao Fu Zhou Cuisine is a simple Chinese hole n the wall cafe specializing in soups & noodles with a view of workers making dumplings by hand. Address: 118 Eldridge St, New York, NY 10002, USA | Hours: Closes 9:30PM | Phone: +1 212-625-2532

I liked the dumplings & would have wanted more except we were having REAL lunch soon, so I had to behave. :'( The kids, on the other hand, enjoyed the weird peanut butter noodles.

After a quick pre-lunch, met up in Chinatown for our REAL lunch with the Madrazos. 3 hours went by pretty fast & soon we were saying our goodbyes. </3

The Madrazos frequent this Chinese resto HOY WONG RESTAURANT in chinatown whenever they would come to New York, and they wanted us to try the simple but delectable meal as well. Roast duck you say? We are soooo G! 😉

Hoy Wong Restaurant serves roasted duck, spare ribs & other Cantonese specialties since 1978. Address: 81 Mott St, New York, NY 10013, USA | Hours: Closes 10PM | Phone: +1 212-374-1312

Good food, and even better company. What else can you ask for? Except more time, maybe. Lunch passed so quickly huhu. The Madrazos had to leave right after since it was a 4 hour drive back to Penn & they had Christmas Eve preparations pa to make. Thank you so much fam for the precious time we got to spend together! Sobrang bitin! :'((

Our babyson took advantage of his Dad’s tulala stage & bought a pricey set of shoes. Ang mahal pala ng Off-White? Pero a gift is a gift, bahala sila to buy whatever they want with the christmas money we gave them.

My Babyson had been impatiently waiting to buy rubber shoes since we arrived in NY. More specifically this NIKE SWOOSH x OFF WHITE Virgil Abloh collab. He has quite a few on his list actually, all pricey, zomg. Kaso with the money we gave him for his birthday & Christmas, mukhang 2-3 pairs lang ang mabibili nya hahahahaha, kawawang bata! Boys & their shoes, hay nako. This OFF-WHITE x Nike Air Max 97 “Black” retails for $200 but because they’re HOT, HOT, HOT, and you won’t find them in any Nike stores, expect to cough up to 3x the price from resellers – which is what stupid paid for! @_@ Kainez.

Release date: October 18, 2018
Price: $200

Unlike the “Menta” version, which, despite being predominantly a non-North American release, was available at OFF-WHITE’s NYC and Toronto flagships, the black colorway was a North America exclusive. It was available only through the US Nike page and the Toronto and New York flagships, giving customers in those locations the chance to win both in a raffle.

The sneaker followed the original 2017 Air Max 97 and was yet another release that strayed from the straight black/white theme Abloh had developed with his VaporMax and Air Prestos.

After doing some considerable damage to his wallet, nakunsensya rin si pogi at tumigil narin sa shopping.

Since it was Christmas eve, wala masyadong bukas na resto so we opted to eat in the apartment nalang. Kap & Ate went grocery-shopping for our noche buena in the morning while the rest of us were getting ready. They came home with steak & other goodies for our dinner at “home”.

Kap cooks a mean steak, better than some restos, I kid you not. So we enjoyed a quiet evening dining on steak & drinking the wine Stephen gifted us with.

No restaurant open for the holiday? No problemo. Our superhero to the rescue! <3

Sasabihin masyado naming inaaping mag-anak si only child, lol. ;)) Mother, kagustuhan po yan ng anak mo. Super labs nya lang talaga kami kaya grabe makapagsilbi. Labs na labs! <3 Thank you my Honey for loving us too much.

My loving family. Thank you Lord!

For dessert, Ate read about Junior’s Cheesecake which is luckily located right across Marriott Hotel along Times Square (where the Madrazos were billeted, kaya alam na namin kung saan). And homaygaaas, the hype is real. Soooobrang sarap I’m telling you. I think it’s the same cheesecake they serve at Wolfgang Steakhouse in Manila. So light, creamy & just perfect!

Made sure we got a cheesecake from Junior’s Restaurant along Times Square before they closed for the night! Haba sobra ng pila but the service was quick at handa sila sa dami ng bibili so the turnover was quick & efficient. Good job guys! \m/

Zomg, hands down THE BEST CHEESECAKE I’ve ever tasted huhu. I would have bought a dozen more to take home except ang dami pa naming cities na dadaanan in the days to come. Maghirap magbitbit sa eroplano. :'((

And since we were still on Manila time, hindi na namin nahintay ang stroke of midnight. We were fast asleep by 10 pm.

Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night. :-*
