The Italian Market takes its inspiration from the vibrant food scene in the famous South 9th Street Italian Market in Philadelphia. Unknown to many -including me, the freshest, most interesting Italian-American cuisine can be found in the city of Philadephia.
Handled by young & talented chef, PETER AYSON (of the RED CRAB GROUP as well as the Pink Panda & Hatch 22 fame), The Italian Market aims to introduce Italian-American food, or Italian classics done the American way, to the Filipino market. Think cheesesteaks and cannolis, using American ingredients.
Specialties at The Italian Market include their vast array of pasta dishes and pizza, all given a classic Americana twist. Another item diners can look forward to are the open-faced sandwiches. We normally associate sandwiches for snacks, but The Italian Market‘s HUGE open-faced sandwiches are very hearty & flavorful, and can definitely stand on their own as full meals.
It was a couple of days before the Chinese New Year celebration so the mall was adorned with festive red everywhere! <3 Can you spot my main chinese squeeze? ;P
The interior is warm & cozy. If you have an aversion to heat, do not sit by the stove no matter how much the welcoming sight of fire lures you in. :P
The Italian Market boasts of its special AMBROGI oven which it has imported from Italy. The oven uses three heat sources: wood, gas, and charcoal, which give food a distinct smoky taste. With regards to the chopping knives on the wall, Chef Peter says those represent the Sous Chefs na “na-tsugi“. :P Madami-dami na rin kung ganon.
