Romulo Cafe Revisited

I had mixed thoughts & feelings when an invite to dine at Romulo Cafe was extended. My first visit was a disappointment so I was really apprehensive. But then again, that was during the initial stages of the restaurant. I decided I’d give it another go. THREE more goes actually since we were to have dinner, breakfast, and lunch there during our weekend staycation at Azumi Boutique Hotel.

If there’s anything I’ve learned from my foodie friends, it’s that it is really best to visit a new resto after it has settled down a bit & planted its roots para hindi na nangangapa. Not just in terms of food, but service as well. Also, like people, Chefs have off days. Even the wait staff. They are, after all, human beings just like you & I. ;) So there’s always room for second chances. And third. 3rd time is usually the charm. On the fourth, write it off for good na. Talagang wala nang pagasa! :P

Not to sound biased just because we were there as guests, but boy did they make a 180 degree turn! And I’m so glad too, because otherwise, how else would I review them here without getting in the hot seat, right? Patay tayo diyan!

They not only got my stamp of approval this time around, but the GOppets’ as well. And that says a lot, especially for Filipino food, as you very well know. You can check to see my “before” & “after” photos to see their marked improvement not just visually, but more importantly, taste wise too. Even the serving size got bigger, so maybe they were still adjusting when I first visited. Kudos to Chefs Charlie Tuberleha & Rona Buenafe for a job well done! \m/

Romulo Cafe

2205 Market Street, Madrigal Business Park, Phase III Alabang, Muntinlupa City (02) 5561443

I must say, even on my first visit, Romulo Cafe really has the best interiors by the Almario sisters. It’s such a lovely place to take your dates for a fun evening out. Or for families during lunchtimes.

I never liked green, but somehow this works for me. <3

The Wall of Frames.. teehee, get it? #corny #halloffame

Plus check it out (click to enlarge), the pricing isn’t OA!

Cool as cucumber 110 php to get us started. I found it too sweet though so I added water & ice. It was perfect na after. Loved the cucumber element. From skin-care to fighting cancer, the humble cucumber is a great ally in your quest for good health. \m/

Tinapa Roll 150 php. Shredded tinapa with red eggs and tomatoes in a lumpia wrapper.

Molo Soup 85 php. Shrimp dumplings in a savory chicken broth.

This Ginataang Kuhol 190 php rocked my dinner! So good & spicy that it warranted an extra cup of rice, zOMG! <3 Cooked in coconut oil & taken out of its shell to for easier eating. I can have this over & over again. <3

They don’t eat this at home so I was surprised when my 3 kids finished a platter of this Bistek Tagalog 370 php all by themselves! Sliced beef cooked with soy sauce and kalamansi and served with caramelised onions. It looked salty to me with all that soy sauce but they said it was delish! \m/

If there was one dish that I found fault in -if you can even call it that, it’s this Baked Lemongrass Chicken 260 php. 1/2 chicken marinated with fresh lemongrass. Dry. It’s really hard to cook a moist chicken, especially the white meat part. I suggest you skip this & try the other entrees.

Lumpiang Hubad 140 php. Steamed vegetables with two sauces (peanut sauce and garlic sauce).

A sure-fire winner is this Lola Virginia’s Chicken Relleno 630 php. Good na, big serving pa. 1/2 roasted chicken stuffed with ground pork, raisins, chorizo, and peas.

Turon with Mantecado Ice Cream 150 php.

Missing my babyson. College will be starting soon so I let him hang out lang with his high school barkada whenever he wants. He’ll be busy enough in the days to come.

I was floored with the price of the breakfast buffet at Romulo Cafe. 365 php only. NETT! @_@ Admittedly, it’s a small spread. And the choices vary from day to day, but hey, the price is still unbeatable. You may opt to go ala carte. But for 365 NETT I’d choose to go with the buffet, wouldn’t you?

Here’s what they served last Sunday for breakfast..

Save for dessert (even fruits would have been welcome), the buffet spread is as complete as it gets.

Kap liked the pork belly a lot, which he used as palaman for the steamed white bun (below). Meanwhile, the scrambled eggs were done perfectly.

There was no bacon that day but we ordered separately for the kids coz after all, breakfast is not breakfast without bacon RIGHT??? <3 Again, you can order ala carte if you don’t find anything in the buffet to your liking.

My breakfast starter. Toasted whole wheat smothered with peanut butter & jelly. Yum! <3 Paired of course with my morning beverages of choice, coffee & orange juice.

I really loved the egg, and the pork belly was so tender & tasty. Loved ’em!

My darling babies wide awake & ready for church just a short walking distance away (well except for the one with the bed head. :| Breakfast is served from 6am-10 am.

After a nourishing food for the soul at the nearby CCF, it was time for a nourishing food for the tummy as we headed back to Romulo Cafe after our 10am service.

Appetizer of Pinoy Nachos 105 php while we waited for lunch to be served. Kamote and taro chips drizzled with melted kesong puti, keso de bola and tomato.

Beef Bulalo 420 php. Beef bone-marrow boiled until tender and served with corn.

Lechon Kawali 360 php. Crispy deep-fried roasted pork served with liver sauce.

Bangus al Ajillo 300 php. Bangus belly with garlic rice.

My absolute favorite at lunch! Crispy Pork Binagoongan 360 php. So good & tender that we had 2 orders of this! <3 Crispy deep-fried pork cooked with tomatoes & bagoong.

Also a winner for me, Ginataang Kalabasa and Sitaw with Crablets 205 php. Pumpkin and string beans cooked in coconut milk and topped with crispy crab lets.

Laing with Adobo Flakes 165 php. Taro leaves cooked in coconut milk and topped with adobo flakes.

If you were to choose only 1 from the dessert list, this is a MUST. This Suman sa Latik 70 php is so fat & yummy. Dip it in the latik, I LAVETT! <3

The mudras joined in on the fun with the staycationers. :) We really try to take them with us now, especially on family days.

Thank you so much Romulo Cafe for a yummy pinoy lunch, and for proving me wrong! :) We will definitely be back.
