My Kids Others Pets

Looking for Trouble

My girls are looking for trouble. They want to add another pet to the household. As if Jela’s not enough! @_@ A couple of weeks ago, I saw an adoption notice in our village ad so I took Ate for a look-see. JUST A LOOK-SEE. Kaso kinarga nya, naloko na! She fell in love. I told her we cannot absolutely bring home a puppy as small as that, matatapakan sa bahay, kawawa lang. There are so many people in our home & it’s always as busy as can be with people coming & going. Mahirap na.

The Chihuahua is a tiny toy sized dog. The body is longer than it is tall. The head is well-rounded, apple in shape and the muzzle is short and pointed with a well-defined stop. The Chihuahua is a good companion dog. Courageous, extremely lively, proud and adventurous, they enjoy affection. Brave, cheerful and agile, Chihuahuas can be strong-willed without proper human leadership. They are loyal and become attached to their owners.

We used to have 4 dogs in the house simultaneously. It was CRAZY. I don’t know what got into me. Our giant Great Dane gave birth to a bunch of puppies that were growing amazingly fast & nobody wanted to buy. So I looked in the ads for a trade-off for the bitch & her pups. (We got Scoobie as an adult & she didn’t bond with us well) I was able to get an American Bullpup for my babyson, a shivering rut of a Boston Terrier puppy for Ate, and an 8-month old black Labrador for Kap. On top of our existing English Bullpup whom my Lovey & I shared custody.

Our house STANK. Everybody who came in a mile of the house knew we had dogs. Plural. So no. We are not adding a pet in the near future. Yes, the love they give is infinite & unconditional, but I can barely handle 3 kids with so many ganaps, what more 3 dogs.

I’m talking about vaccines, vet bills, food, the usual upkeep & maintenance. Plus the additional worrying if they get sick or if they run past our gate & get hit by a car. It’s like bringing up 3 more children on top of the real ones.

Ate has been whining to get either a Siberian Husky or a Chow Chow. While my Lovey has set her eyes on a Pug. Kaloka. Our house is so small & so filled to the max with furnitures & knick knacks as well as people that  don’t know where else we will fit the hypothetical pets. 😛

Siberian Huskies are strong, compact, working sled dogs. The medium-sized head is in proportion to the body, with a muzzle that is equal in length to the skull, with a well-defined stop. The color of the nose depends upon the color of the dog’s coat. Siberian Huskies are loving, gentle, playful, happy-go-lucky dogs that are fond of their families. Keen, docile, social, relaxed and rather casual, this is a high-energy dog, especially when young. Good with children and friendly with strangers, they are not watchdogs, for they bark little and love everyone. Huskies are very intelligent and trainable, but they will only obey a command if they see the human is stronger minded than themselves. If the handler does not display leadership, they will not see the point in obeying.

The Pug is a small, stocky, square, thickset dog. The round head is massive with a short, blunt, square-shaped muzzle. Moles on the cheeks are considered beauty spots. The teeth meet in a slight undershot bite. The very large, prominent eyes are dark. The small, thin ears are either rose or button shaped. The face has large, deep wrinkles. The Pug is keen, with a happy-go-lucky attitude. Animated, peppy and spirited, it is loyal, loving and affectionate with its family. Playful, lively and rambunctious, it is sure to keep you laughing. Highly intelligent, it bores easily without variety in its training. These dogs can be a bit willful if they sense they are stronger minded than the humans around them. Pugs are sensitive to the tone of your voice, so harsh punishment is unnecessary. They need an owner who is calm, yet firm, confident and consistent with the rules. This dog is neither excitable nor dull. They are good watchdogs, very devoted and are not yappers.

A couple of weeks ago, they begged me to go to Tiendesitas to look at puppies. “LOOK” is the operative word. And I’ve smartened up. I intentionally left my money at home because I am highly maternal. One look is all it takes & I’ll be bringing home all the puppies from the store!

The Chow Chow is a large, stocky dog originally from northern China where it is now known as the “Fluffy Lion-dog”. It is believed that the Chow Chow is one of the native dogs used as the model for the Foo dog, the traditional stone guardians found in front of Buddhist temples and palaces. The two most distinctive features of the Chow Chow are its blue-black tongue and its almost straight hind legs, which makes it walk rather stilted. The head is large and broad with a flat skull. The muzzle is broad and deep. There is a huge ruff behind the head, which gives it a lion-like appearance. The Chow Chow is a well-mannered dog. Quite good with children. If they get to know cats and other household animals when they are young, they will get along with them when they are adults.

I was pretty proud of how firm I was. Although, I was asking around for a Frenchie. So may balak!

The French Bulldog is a sturdy, compact, stocky little dog, with a large square head that has a rounded forehead. The French Bulldog is a pleasant, easy-care companion who is playful, alert and affectionate. It is enthusiastic and lively, without being yappy and loud. Curious, sweet and absolutely hilarious, it has a very comical personality and loves to clown around. It is bright and easygoing. The Frenchie gets along fairly well with strangers and other animals and enjoys being with its owner. It plays well with other dogs.

And we’d name her TROUBLE! 😛 Except that I’m worried our dear Lelly will feel bad.

The English Bulldog is a wide, medium-sized, compact dog with short legs. The body and head are massive with extra skin on both the skull and forehead falling in folds. The cheeks extend to the sides of the eyes. The muzzle is wide, short and pug with a broad, deep stop. Although the English Bulldog’s appearance can be somewhat intimidating, it is among the gentlest of dogs. It is described as a very affectionate and dependable animal, gentle with children, but known for its courage and its excellent guarding abilities. Bullheaded and determined, this breed can be very persistent. They do not give up easily. Bulldogs are very much a people’s dog, seeking out human attention and loving every bit it can get!

Ang cute ng mga aso sobra diba? Maybe if it were a French Bullpup, I’d allow. Sorry, madaya si Mommy! 😛

Hi Ms. Jane! May I recommend adopting a pound dog? I know they may not look as good as the designer dogs but they will love you as much, maybe even more. I know of a shelter who has adoptable pooches. They stink less than those with breeds, healthier than most (less vet bills, low maintenance), highly intelligent and the most loyal.

Hi Mommy Jane! I have Cynophobia. I either get catatonic or extremely hysterical with dogs. Worst is I sometimes pee on my undies because of such fear. As such, I know I will never own a dog.

One thing I hate about having dogs is the stinky and abhorrent smell they emit especially if they are not well taken cared of. I am just so relieved that my friends and families who treat them as family members know how to take care of their hygiene. So, walang smell sa bahay. I see that you also take to heart the alaga factor you have to shower them when thinking of owning another furry friend.

Just a month or so go, we have a new neighbor (as in next door) in the village who owns DOGS and the stench goes all the way to our home (from our garage to the living room). We CAN’T stand it. We already plead our case together with another neighbor to the village association but to no avail. I don’t know if they have talked to them about it OR our neighbor simply isn’t responsible and considerate pet owners. We have invested in an ionizer and bought all sorts of odor removing and odor absorbing things to keep our house smelling fresh but when you go out of the garage, the smell is beyond tolerable. In fact, I and my husband have been having migraines since then. We thought of speaking to our neighbors and have been praying since for opportunity and wisdom to talk to them about it. It is, after all, a command that WE LOVE OUR NEIGHBORS, right? But, lately, this is really very difficult to do.

I salute all those pet owners who consider the sanitation and hygiene of their pets a priority. I hope that this entry of yours (and my comment), Mommy Jane, will speak to pet owners to be RESPONSIBLE & CONSIDERATE.

      Hi Candy! 🙂

Oh my, alam ko yang amoy na yan. I’m sure it emits from the ear. We used to have a hush puppy kahit bagong ligo SOBRANG baho ng ears nya. We tried everything pati vinegar, kasi sabi ng vet nababasa daw sa loob kaya mabaho. I’m sure it’s the same thing with your neighbor’s dog. Masangsang nga talaga. Maybe you can talk to them in a nice way & suggest. Kaso baka sensitive naman sila mapasama pa lalo. Hmmnnnn.. how how de carabao!

I have (or rather, Chef and I were given custody of) a black-and-tan long-haired chihuahua. I have a soft SOFT spot for black dogs, and this pup was a neglected one – so despite my misgivings about Chis (yappy! snappy!) we took Cookie in. Glad we did; she is SOBRANG clingy and loving. She waits by the door for us to come home from work, and is a quivering mess of fur and tongue when we arrive..

While I agree that short-haired Chihuahuas aren’t very pretty, I must say the long-haired ones are gorgeous. 🙂
