Manila Ocean Park. SEAL-ed with a Kiss!

We would always take the kids to zoos & aquariums in & out of the country when they were little. But it’s been a while since we went so the kids must have forgotten. They were little then. They’ve been to Ocean Park in HK but they’ve always wanted to see the version here. So one day I took them to an impromptu visit! It was out of the blue & so out of character, which made the field trip more fun for the kids because it was unexpected.

One bright day, they were bored out of their minds just a couple of days after school break so we went for a drive. And the drive became longer than expected, we really didn’t have a location in mind. Until we found ourselves along Roxas Blvd. The most viable place was of course Manila Ocean Park! 😉

The kids were fascinated to encounter these graceful & flapping sea creatures up close & personal. We were able to touch the string rays which had a velvet-y / lumot-y feel. While the shark had a sandpaper texture. Did you know? The main predators of the stingrays are sharks, seals, sea lions and large species of carnivorous fish along with humans. Stingrays breed during the winter and the female stingray gives birth to live young usually between 5 and 15 baby stingrays, known as a litter.

Stingrays are a group of rays, which are cartilaginous fish related to sharks. They consist of eight families: sixgill stingray, deep water stingray, stingarees, round rays, whiptail stingrays, river stingrays, butterfly rays, and eagle rays). Most stingrays have one or more barbed stingers on the tail, which are used exclusively in self-defense. The stinger may reach a length of approximately 35 cm (14 in), and its underside has two grooves with venom glands. The stinger is covered with a thin layer of skin, the integumentary sheath, in which the venom is concentrated. Stingrays are common in coastal tropical and subtropical marine waters throughout the world.

The Oceanarium at Manila Ocean Park is home to 14,000 marine creatures from around 277 species, all indigenous to the Philippines and Southeast Asia. Its sheer size and diversity makes it one of the world’s best public aquariums. The Oceanarium is a stunning walkthrough of the watery depths featuring seven sections and containing 1,900 cubic meters of seawater.

The Bamboo Shark is a carpet shark with an adult size that approaches one metre in length. This small, mostly nocturnal species is harmless to humans. The Bamboo Shark is occasionally kept as a pet in larger home aquariums. It can grow up to 93 centimetres (37 in) long.

At the heart of Manila Ocean Park‘s Oceanarium is the main attraction – a 25 meter long, 220° curved walkway tunnel with a spectacular underwater view of amazing sea creatures swimming overhead. The water source for the Oceanarium is filtered water from Manila Bay. A special process is done to ensure that the seawater is suitable to marine life. It has an educational activity area, unique function rooms for special events and bi-level shark and stingray viewing facilities.

Jellyfishes are some of the most beautiful creatures of the ocean. They are commonly known as “dancing sea fairies”, gracefully gliding below and on the surface. The Jellies Exhibit has various species with a fascinating display of multi-media effects and breathtaking music. Know more about these transparent marine wonders who have been around for millions of years.

Jellyfish or jellies are the major non-polyp form of individuals. They are typified as free-swimming marine animals consisting of a gelatinous umbrella-shaped bell and trailing tentacles. The bell can pulsate for locomotion, while stinging tentacles can be used to capture prey. Jellyfish are found in every ocean, from the surface to the deep sea. Scyphozoans are exclusively marine, but some hydrozoans live in freshwater. Large, often colorful, jellyfish are common in coastal zones worldwide. Jellyfish have roamed the seas for at least 500 million years, and possibly 700 million years or more, making them the oldest multi-organ animal.
