Maleficent in 4DX

Ever since the 4DX Cinema in Bonifacio Global City opened last April 30, 2014, the kids have been clamoring for me to buy tickets so we can try it. And I’ve really been doing my best to -with Spiderman, then with X-Men, and finally my luck turned for the better with the recent Disney movie, MALEFICENT.

Maleficent is a 2014 dark fantasy adventure film starring Angelina Jolie as the eponymous Disney Villainess character, the film is a live-action re-imagining of Walt Disney’s 1959 animated film Sleeping Beauty, and portrays the story from the perspective of the antagonist, Maleficent. Maleficent explores the untold story of Disney’s most iconic villain and the elements of her betrayal that ultimately turned her pure heart to stone. Driven by revenge and a fierce desire to protect the moors over which she presides, Maleficent cruelly places an irrevocable curse upon the human king’s newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Aurora (Elle Fanning) is caught in the middle of the seething conflict between the forest kingdom she has grown to love and the human kingdom that holds her legacy. Maleficent realizes that Aurora may hold the key to peace in the land and is forced to take drastic actions that will change both worlds forever.

It shouldn’t be so hard really, with online purchase at SURESEATS.COM available, but every time I try to buy, the particular cinema is booked solid! There’s only 1 cinema in the ultra posh BONIFACIO HIGH STREET CINEMA at the CENTER SQUARE BUILDING that offers the 4D experience. And it’s the first & only in the Philippines. Ticket per person costs 450 php/showing but you’d think it’s free with the way the seats are always booked!

Behind that door is the key to our momentary happiness! 😛

The 4DX, an all-senses technology that incorporates chair movement, mist, fog, light flashes and gusts of wind and even scents that gives the audience a feel of physical participation within the movie. The experience is amped-up by full surround-sound environments through front and ceiling mounted speakers – the aural enhancements from the latest from Dolby Laboratories – the perfected audio environment of Dolby Atmos.

Kap & I have a small gap between our seats (notice the chain) & we were holding hands throughout the movie, so I noticed that his seat would move at a slightly different pace than mine. I think the seats move in waves, not altogether. We had fun with the whiffs of scents, the mist, the air that blows on your face & lower legs at some parts. The bump & wiggling at your back. It’s very similar to the Soarin’ Over California in Disney’s California Adventure.

The seats have footrests since the whole chair moves, so your feet doesn’t actually touch the floor. For those who get dizzy easily, take caution because it can get a bit nauseous especially with the 3D glasses & effect. I wouldn’t advice this to senior citizens. I got a bit dizzy somewhere in the middle of the showing so I took off my glasses for a while. But the film quality is really superb & fantabulous! <3 With the 3D glasses you have an illusion that everything is so near you it’s like you can actually touch what you’re watching.

Moral lesson of the story. There is a story behind every bully. No one is really evil, there was once a pure & innocent part of him that’s buried deep beneath the superficial wounds & scars, even on a person with the toughest of heart. Get that goodness back out, that’s how you kill a bully.

All in all, we had a really great time and it was well worth every single centavo we paid for. Having said that, I must also declare that Maleficent is now my new Disney favorite -I love happy endings! <3 2 thumbs up for the sight, the sound, the smell, and the motion. The thing is, once you go 4D, you never wanna go back to plain boring 1D. So that will really pose as a big problem to Kap hehe.

Do give 4DX a try. I assure you it’s an experience you’ll cherish. 🙂

Up tomorrow: Where we ate dinner after the movie. Please come back for that.
