Savor Shanghai at Shang Palace, Makati Shangri-La Manila

Even before I became a Blogger, and ever since the kids were small, Makati Shangri-La Manila always had a soft spot in our hearts. Circles was not yet Circles, but the GOppets already considered Makati Shangri-La Manila our second home.

In fact, Ate had her first birthday in the ballroom of the grandest hotel of her time. And when time & finances permit, we would often celebrate milestones at Circles Buffet, my babyson’s happy place. Posh Ate & Lovey likes Inagiku while Kap of course enjoys the Dimsum Plus at Shang Palace.  For the GOppets, Makati Shangri-La Manila IS home.

So whenever Kap & I would get invited to events introducing guest Chefs & for-a-limited-time-only culinary experience, I make sure that our day is free, or if it’s not, that it’s freed up. That’s how much we love Makati Shangri-La Manila.

For this particular event, Makati Shangri-La Manila was celebrating the guest appearance of award-winning guest chef, WADE WEI ZHONG XIANG from Pudong Shangri-La East Shanghai as he brings with him his Shanghainese delights to Shang Palace of Makati Shangri-La Manila.

I love the different themes of the dining outlets of Makati Shangri-La Manila. Every room speaks of volumes of gastronomic adventures! <3

The Shanghai Specialties Set Menu at 2,888 per person: Shanghai delicacies appetizer | Shanghai-style yellow croaker soup | Clove pork ribs | Grouper ball with rice wine sauce | Braised carrot & turnip with conpoy | Shanghai-style fried noodles | Chef’s dessert

I was surprised to find myself reaching out for this Sliced Cucumber Skin in Hot & Sour sauce & eating more than my fair share. I love how it’s sour & crunchy.

Marinated lily bulbs & pumpkin with honey.

This chilled crystal pig’s ear had the right kind of crunch & flavor even without having to dip it in sauce.

Poached river shrimp

If I were to dine ala carte, I would really make sure I order this light & savoury Shanghai-style yellow croaker soup. Croaker is a yellowfin fish that frequents bays, channels, harbors and other nearshore waters over sandy bottoms. I don’t normally indulge in soup during the summer season because of the unbearable heat but this is one dish at #SavorShanghai that I wouldn’t pass up. So light & tasty. And served in a pretty bowl too. How can I resist?

Fall off the bone, soooo tender Clove Pork Ribs from the #SavorShanghai set menu. Now tell me, how does one go on a diet when something as astonishing as this is presented in front of you. HOW? And I know ALL of you are probably wondering who took this beautiful photo. #LamNa Credits to my date! ;)

Grouper ball with rice wine sauce. The lapu-lapu is so fresh & tender but at the same time firm to the bite.

Braised Carrot & Turnip with Conpoy (dried scallop) at #SavorShanghai brought out by our warm & friendly server, GOMER. So. I had my veggie requirement for the day. I’m good for the week, lels!

Shanghai-style fried noodles

The perfect dessert to cap off a light #SavorShanghai lunch. Red date gelatin as Chef’s dessert. Chef Wade explained that the original ingredient uses an edible flower instead of the red date, but since the flower is exclusive to the shanghai restaurant, he made use of red date that adds to the brown color of this gelatinous dessert.

Chef Wade brings over 25 years of culinary experience to Manila, having spent almost two decades working at a number of luxury hotels and restaurants in China. Chef Wade has accredited a long list of culinary achievements, including the Gold Medal Awards in Huai Yang Innovative Cuisine competition and Yangzhou Cooking Skill competition in 2005.

Chef Wade with Shang Palace manager, Malaysian AGNES CHUA, who also acted as his interpreter & conveyed his description of each food to us articulately & accurately.

From today until May 15, 2015, enjoy a sojourn dubbed Savor Shanghai. Chef Wade will flare up the kitchen of Makati Shangri-La Manila’s Shang Palace as he prepares his signature dishes for a set menu which includes: Clove Pork Ribs, Grouper ball with rice wine sauce and his most sought after dish Sweet & Sour Larimichthys Crocea (Yellow Croaker Fish – available ala carte).
