Food & Dining My Kids

Kafe Batwan

Digital Walker had a mega sale at the Rockwell Tent some weekends ago so being heavy gadget users, the girls & I went to see what treasures we can find for our phones, cameras, laptops & what-have-yous!

Since we were already in the Rockwell area, it was a great opportunity to try KAFE BATWAN by Chef JP Anglo of the Sarsa fame. Click HERE to read my previous post on Sarsa. Kafe Batwan is a brother & sister tandem of Chef JP & his sister Tracy Anglo-Dizon, featuring Negrense dishes from Bacolod.

Kafe Batwan occupies the former BISTECCA restaurant at the Joya Lofts & Tower across Rockwell Powerplant Mall.

The ground floor was packed. Good thing they had a few tables left on the 2nd floor so we didn’t have to wait outside in the rain.

Met up with Richard & Irene who just came from Canada & had pasalubong for the GOppets. <3 Thank you Chard & Irene for your thoughtfulness. :-* That Sriracha popcorn is THE BOMB! The girls are already looking into the possibility of ordering online & having a bulk shipped. That’s how good it is! \m/

Anyway, the name Kafe Batwan is taken from the word batwan (or batuan) which is a fruit commonly used as a souring agent for Negrenses, and is an ingredient Chef JP incorporates into his dishes at Kafe Batwan. So most of the dishes have a sour tinge.

The list on the menu isn’t extensive as chef JP is ever changing & ever evolving. So do expect new dishes from time to time with some of the older ones gone or scraped off. The girls & I ordered the following:

We started our meal with Kansi Panada 250 php with batwan gravy. Chef JP’s take on the ordinary empanada.

There’s plenty of Kansi filling but I don’t know, it didn’t work for me as much as it did for the girls. I’m glad though, I like that they enjoy our dates & the food that mommy orders. <3 Beef Kansi is sort of like a cross between Bulalo and Sinigang. One of the finest delicacies of Bacolod City, it is Ilonggo’s version of the famous Bulalo.

Dinuguuan is LOVE so after I cut the sili & mixed in the seeds, I was polishing off this dish like there was no tomorrow. Dinuguan with puto 250.00 There are plenty of seeds from the batuan so be careful lest you ingest them too.

I was feeling under the weather with cough residue from my asthma bout so I wanted something hot & comforting. This did the job for me. Tasty Madrid Fusion Super Batchoy 450 php. 12-hour soup stock, kurobota charsiu, soft-boiled egg and tuna skin.

For my ever health-conscious Ate, this out of place Granola 330 php with caramilk and mixed fruits. :P

My Lovey likes 1.) Burrito 2.) Inasal & 3) Hummus. And I think all 3 are incorporated into this dish so she was happy! Inasal Burrito 250 php with pumpkin salsa and fresh green chili sauce.

For our dessert, we got the Sizzling Budbud 250 php with ube butter and coco pandan coffee cream.

and the Chocnut Turon 195 php. Banana spring rolls with chocnut spread. There are only 2 desserts at Kafe Batwan. Chef JP is not big on sweet endings! :P

While Richard & Irene had these when they followed after a shopping craze at Digital Walker. They bought 200 Crumpler bags at around 600 php each. CRAZY RIGHT??? Aga mag-Christmas shopping! (Note: Ayoko ng camera bag ha. Gusto ko camera mismo!)

Sinigang Fried Chicken 295 php with cassava fries and bell pepper gata. With Garlic Coconut Rice 60 php.

Here’s a better view of the chicken that was hiding. ;)) Richard said it was tasty & packed a nice sour punch.

Sauteed Prawns 495 php with mixed bean sauce and sambal beans.

Who should we also see at Kafe Batwan but Richie & Rina and Eugene too, with arms full of packages from Digital Walker. You know a techie when you see one. And I saw THREE. Ang daming hakot! :P So I snuck in a few shots of their food as well to share with you haha!

Nangapit-bahay ako to take photos of their food & to chika what sort of amazing stuff they found at Digital Walker.

Trio of Pinoy Spreads 250 php. Monggo labuyo, salted egg talong, and tahong ginamos with biscotto pandesal.

Grilled Kurobuta Belly 550 php with sambal beans.

Grilled Sugarcane Porkchop 350 php with kamote mash.

Now I literally DROOLED when I saw this on their table, but I was too shy (nuks!) to ask to try haha. Lamb Kaldereta 550 php with sambal beans.

Ang daming superstars sa Kafe Batwan nung sabado. May Tales from the Tummy na, may Pickiest Eater pa! With Rina’s Rainbow & Hefty Foodie, kumpletos rekados. ;)

On our way out, we found the shy & soft-spoken chef. Of course a photo op is not far behind with Sugar & Spice (the camwhore). :P

After a heavy lunch, it was time to walk it off.. Naloko na! S-A-L-E.. every husband’s nightmare! :P

I wonder where our wandering feet will take us next. With the GOppets, life is an adventure. Mayong Aga!
