The Big One. GOppets Emergency Survival Kit

Feb 2017. Phivolcs warns Valley Fault residents..

MANILA, Philippines – Residents of Metro Manila and nearby provinces should prepare for the “Big One,” a magnitude 7.2 earthquake to be generated by the West Valley Fault, which is ripe for movement.

Amid the devastation caused by the magnitude 6.7 earthquake in Surigao, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) yesterday appealed to residents of Metro Manila and nearby provinces to prepare for a powerful earthquake that could kill thousands.

The 100-kilometer fault traverses parts of Bulacan through Quezon City, Marikina, Makati, Pasig, Taguig and Muntinlupa in Metro Manila; San Pedro, Biñan, Sta. Rosa, Cabuyao and Calamba in Laguna; and Carmona, General Mariano Alvarez and Silang in Cavite.

Eh di syempre naman panic mode agad ang ina ng bayan (Nobodeh, nobodeh but meeeh). Tatamaan ang mga bagets, especially Ate huhu. I keep praying na sana maudlot. Or if indeed it has to happen, not during the day when the kids are in school & people are in the offices. Gabi na lang sana when everybody’s safe & sound at home with their respective families.

Praning that I am, I immediately made a survival kit for the 2 kids who are so very faaaaar away from home during weekdays. On a normal day, traffic is already so bad. What more in cases of emergency. I doubt if they can get home right away what with blocked roads & people & stalled cars littering the streets. Call me cray but it’s always better to be safe than sorry..

Make your own Emergency/Survival Kit: (I got most of these from Lazada)
* Easy-to-carry box with handle (which can also be used as a flotation device in cases of flooding) to store all your supplies.
* Food (nuts & energy bars) & Drinks (energy drink) that won’t spoil even when kept for a long period of time.
* Medicines (fever, cough, colds, diarrhea, nausea, pain, antiseptic, bandages, burn ointment, wound ointment & dressing). Mosquito repellant lotion.
* Batteries (good for 2 days at least).
* Phone chargers. I was able to buy AA battery-operated chargers for when there is no available electricity. Power bank for back up at least 1 full cycle. Octopus socket for multiple charging in case electricity is still available & you need to charge everything at the same time.
* CASH. When disaster strikes ATMs might not be able to work, or money might run out from the machines.
* Flashlight & Battery-operated transistor radio (for news updates – save our phone for more important things).
* Swiss army knife/Multi-tool which can double as a weapon.
* Whistles in case you are trapped beneath rubbles (as is common in earthquakes)
– Goggles, mask/gasmasks for dust particles as is common in earthquakes & rubbles

Add to that the mysterious surfacing of deep sea creatures such as the OARFISH which can only imply that not everything is A-OK with the world. :'(

The Oarfish, which can weigh up to 600 pounds (270 kilograms), is known as the “Messenger from the Sea God’s Palace,” Deep-sea fish living near the sea bottom are more sensitive to the movements of active faults than those near the surface of the sea.

The little-known bony fish were found ahead of the deadly 6.5 quake that devastated Mindanao Island on Feb. 8. In one instance, a 10-foot-long oarfish washed up onto a beach on the island just two days before, and another was caught by a fisherman. Five more oarfish were found off Mindanao’s northern coast in the days following the natural disaster. It has prompted speculation that the sea creatures are able to “predict” or detect early tremors.

May kasabihan, better safe than sorry. And speaking of earthquakes, my earth-shattering experience on the blog this Thursday. @_@ Abangan, hay.

O God, who set the earth on its firm foundation, please spare those who are fearful and show favor to those who implore you so that all dangers of earthquake may be entirely gone. And allow us to continue to experience your mercy and serve you in thankfulness, safe under your protection.

We are all the work of your hands. For though the mountains leave their place and the hills be tossed to the ground, Your love shall never leave us and your promise of peace will never be shaken.

Lord, please show us Your mercy and love, and grant us Your salvation. Our help is in the name of the Lord who made the heavens and the earth.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

    Hi Jane,
We also have a Bug Out Bag in case of disaster. (U.S.)
    May I suggest the following:
    – Hard Candy / Beef Jerky / dried fruits (like raisins)
    – Duct tape
    – a small Mirror (use for signalling, etc.)
    – Waterproof matches
    – Works gloves / disposable gloves
    – Baby Diaper ( 2 pcs. very good for absorption / for bleeding / as an ice bag too)
    – Pair of socks
I pray that we don’t need to use them. Ingat! Thanks!

Amen Jane! I prayed the prayer you shared… nakakatakot talaga. Lalo na for me, I work along the faultline and we live 5 kms away from the faultline too. Prayer ko lang is that magkakasama kaming pamilya if ever the big one (which I hope to God doesn’t) happen.

Thanks for sharing the prayer, Mommy Jane. We packed our grab bags but they’re super heavy! Kailangan yata ire-think yung laman at baka di na ako makalakad sa bigat! ;P

Kami we need to practice din our earthquake drill dito sa house. Schools and offices are practicing drills… dapat dito rin sa bahay.
