Dean & Deluca

Manila is getting to be a foodie’s delight what with popular restaurant franchises popping up left & right. Where once upon a time we had to go far & away just to sample hotspots available only abroad, bigwigs have taken it upon themselves to deliver them right on our laps. Thank you food gods!

Click HERE to read about Caroline Tanchay who bravely brought the D&D franchise to Manila!

Latest to open here is New York City’s famous food shop DEAN & DELUCA at Rockwell’s Edades Tower. Dean & Deluca is originally an upscale grocery chain that has evolved to a cafe/deli/bakery of sorts.

As a young girl, I actually came aware of Dean & Deluca while watching Silence of the Lambs circa 2001 starring Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter. He was on a plane after his infamous escape & he unwrapped a Dean & Deluca box on the plane which revealed a *BLEEP* alongside his delicious delicatessen. He then gave some from his travel pack to a child. I can never forget that scene. :P Gross story I know. But it is what it is.

In the closing scene of Silence of the Lambs, we can see the main protagonist Hannibal Lecter having lunch during a plane journey. He unwraps a Dean & Deluca takeaway package that he brought on board with him. His lunch includes plenty of delicious products from this upmarket delicatessen. However, there is also a small box that includes a piece of human brain. How’s that for a product placement. Would you want your brand to be in that scene? Apparently Dean & DeLuca agreed to this product placement because “they liked the idea of being identified with a ‘hip, edgy’ movie like Hannibal”. Dean & DeLuca’s Pat Roney, who okayed the collaboration, said: “We figured people would know that the container’s contents didn’t come from Dean & DeLuca. We have a lot of exciting products, but that’s not one of them.” Source:

Strangest product placement ever, but in my young mind, I was intrigued. Ano ba yang Dean & Deluca na yan?! And it has stuck to my mind ever since. I’m so happy I finally got to try it in Manila. The girls & I excitedly bought a bunch to sample, can you tell? ;P

My darling is so happy with all the chocolates that I wanted to buy her the whole stack! She got a few.

And apparently still not happy with our take-home loot, went on to sit & munch on these yummy spread..

With my 2 lovely girls around I really don’t have to do anything except park my tush & enjoy their service & love. <3 The big one takes care of my blog photos while the lil one ny social media pics. And they do the queueing & placing of orders too, I just sit back, relax, and eat whatever it is they got for me. Oh happy life! ;)

New York soda in lemon & strawberry 120 php each.

Cuban Sourdough Bread Sandwich 420 php.

Spaghetti in tomato cream sauce with chicken parmigiana 460 php. My best bet for the mains. The pasta was al dente & the tomato sauce light & fantastic! <3 Ate found it to be a bit bland but I found it perfectly seasoned.

Margherita Sourdough Pizza. With parma ham, rocket leaves, and parmigiano. 675 php. Chewy & dough-y. I’ll order this again next time in a heartbeat.

The “secret” behind the lip-smackin’ pizza! Wood fired stove! “Not Fuh Nuttin’ but these guys know what they’re doin’! ;)

Salted caramel cake 260 php. My bet for dessert. MUST TRY! <3

Meanwhile, Ate preferred this Flourless chocolate page cake 200 php. My Lovey was Switzerland & didn’t take sides. She simply ate from both with much gusto! :P

And with that, the 3 little piggies went Weeee! Weeeee! Weeeeee! All the way home. Oink!

Grabe Jane! Ang mahal!!! Seriously, very limited lang talaga ang target market nito. And it’s obviously not me.

Still, I hope they do well in this very fickle and competitive industry.

On a different note, dapat mag-UP College of Medicine si Jana! hahaha… (biased ako, hahaha…).

I first tried Dean and Deluca in (of all places) Dubai in 2013. Glad to know I need not fly 9 hours for another taste.
It was also my first time to try Shake Shack. Haha… Sana sila na ang next to come to Manila! :D

Hello! Would you know about its operating hours? Heard it’s still on soft opening and I’m not sure what it opens in the morning. My husband and I would like to try it for breakfast one Saturday.
