Blackbird.. Blackbird.. everywhere I looked, it’s Blackbird I read about. @_@ So of course I had to get in on the action too!

Last Saturday, my 2 girls were in for a treat when I surprised them with a brunch date at the innest place in Manila, The BLACKBIRD by Chef Colin Mackay of Sala and People’s Palace fame at the Nielson Tower, now more popularly known as Ayala Triangle. Of course they dropped everything on their agenda & came along. ;)

The Blackbird Nielson Tower, barely 2 months old, is already FULLY BOOKED at all times of the day & you need to call in advance to get a table! Lucky for us, there was a cancellation so we were ushered right in. Table for 3 please?

The Blackbird Nielson Tower is actually named after a very famous supersonic jet called the Blackbird Constellation. Aside from the fact that the well-preserved pre-war Nielson Tower building (which was originally the Manila International Air Terminal built in 1937 & remains the only pre-World War II structure in Makati) where the restaurant resides has once served as the control tower of the Nielson Airport, one of Asia’s first international commercial airports, Chef Collins has always been fascinated with the fastest plane in the world. Therefore the apt name.

The Blackbird Nielson Tower is decked in wrought iron, glass, and a predominantly black & white theme -except for a few pop of colors here & there, with a winding grand staircase as the focal point. The stairway leads to more seating section upstairs which can be reserved for private dining for a cool consumable amount of 50,000 php and can fit a party of approximately 20-25 people, and downstairs -the kitchen where the action is.

Save for the first 2 we ordered, I can honestly say that the hype for this new & popular resto is pretty accurate. Everything else was really exemplary, I just find the price a bit steep especially since the servings are quite small. Don’t let the photos fool you, the servings ARE small. We were able to finish everything on our table.. and we ordered quite a lot! :P

Apple, pecan,and Cos lettuce in Green goddess dressing 390 php. I expected more from a salad worth 400++.

The Blackbird Burger 620 php. Scamorza, Pickles, Tomato with Chili Jam & Fries. Looks picture perfect doesn’t it?

Except when you see the inside. I specifically asked for a MEDIUM cooked burger. Not medium well but medium. When I sliced this open & saw how it was borderline overcooked, I tried to send it back. However, my server said it was MEDIUM & that’s how they cook it. I didn’t think so, but I didn’t want to waste a beautiful day arguing, so I just let it go. The burger was SUPER dry though, and tough. So I didn’t eat it anymore after a few bites. I was really looking forward to eating at Blackbird the whole week so I was really disappointed. (I didn’t eat the buns & fries too, FYI :P )

 

The rest were pretty good though & I didn’t hear a peep from my companions..

Prawn Scotch Quail Eggs, Betel leaves & Coconut Chili Sambal 280 php. Blackbird’s version of Son-in-law eggs. Good but pricey considering the size. One bite I promise you. ONE.

Cheddar & Courgette Brioche, Chorizo, Piperade & Soft-poached egg 490 php. This was like 3 fingers thick, so better order up because it takes a while for them to serve your meal.

Although small, this one is clearly a WINNER! <3 Perfect yolk, perfect flavors mixed in on a perfectly toasted bread.

Grilled Octopus, cucumber pickle in sesame & soy 580 php. Tender yet chewy with the right amount of sweet & salty combination. Again, as you can see, this is like 6 pcs. tops.

The Blackbird Nielson Tower’s most popular dessert, or so I’ve been told by our server, the Apple Nougatine Tart with Burnt Butter Ice Cream 340 php. I snuck in a teensy weensy bite of both apple & ice cream & it was truly heaven on a dish! <3

Peppered Strawberries, Roasted Rice Ice Cream in Coconut Biscuit 340 php. I actually thought there would be more strawberries. :))

 

Overall, we were happy with the food, the presentation, the ambiance, and even the wait staff were courteous.Obviously, The Blackbird Nielson Tower is one must-try restaurant. Just make sure you order a bit more than you normally do. ;)

There are just so many great new finds that keep popping up that it’s really hard to keep up! ‘Til our next weekend food adventure! :-*

    Grabe! The prices at newly opened restaurants right now are craaaaazy! The Partner and I tend to stay away from overpriced, overhyped restos nowadays, fad notwithstanding, and just stick to restaurants that are more reasonably priced, generously portioned, and deliciously cooked.

      So true Niel! And mej na-hype kasi kaya booked solid. Food is really good naman but it’s also something you can get elsewhere at a more modest price. Siguro the location & ambiance played a BIG part (half siguro hehe) of the price. ;))

    I do remember this building to be the Filipinas Heritage Library. It used to house technological information on Philippine history, culture and arts. that place was so sentimental for me. Now, it daunts me to believe that it was transformed into a fine, classy restaurant. Once I come back in Manila, I will definitely stop by and even try to dine in this cuisine — just to re-feel the ambiance, recall all the rich memories I have ever kept.

      Awwww. Yes I hope visiting this place will bring back fond memories. Hopefully, it will still be open. :P A lot of new & old restaurants have been closing left & right due to the big boom.
